For those of you who were not able to make it here is some notes from the meeting.
Wesleyan University is a small selective liberal arts university.
- Founded in 1831
- Focus on students earning Bachelor degree
- 2,700 undergraduates
- 190 graduate students
- Advanced degrees in Sciences, Math and Music
- Co-educational; half men, half women
- Along with Amherst and William Colleges, sometimes called “The Little Three” or “The Little Ivies”
- Located in Middletown, Connecticut
- Population approximately 45,000
- Halfway between Boston and New York City each two hours away, by car
Liberal Arts Curriculum
- Broad academic program in arts, humanities, social sciences, natural sciences and mathematics
- Quantitative subjects important
- Advanced degrees in Science provide more research opportunities
- Breadth and depth expected
- 32 credits/discrete courses required for graduation
- 8 semesters (4 years)
- Typical course load is 4 or 5 courses per semester
- Not vocational
- Skills, or “essential capabilities” emphasized
Curriculum has 3 Divisions
- Arts and Humanities
- Social and Behavioral Sciences
- Natural Science and Mathematics
Expectations for General Education
- No core curriculum
- Students take at least 3 courses in each of the 3 divisions
Major Requirements
- Usually 10 or 12 courses, or one third of total course work
- Chosen at end of sophomore (second) year
Academic Standards are very high
- Wesleyan is very selective
- Approximately 7,500 applications for 720 places in frosh class
- Over 370 applications for 22 Freeman Asian Scholars
- Students work extraordinarily hard
- Supportive, inspirational environment - not competitive
Resources are Outstanding
- 250 acre campus
- Historic
- 11 building Center for the Arts
- Latest technology in classrooms and laboratories
- Small college provides access to professors
- Faculty to student ratio is 1:9
- Professors are teacher/scholars
- 30% of students write a senior thesis
Student Body is Engaged and Productive
- Over 200 student groups
- The Arts are well integrated into campus life

- Citizen or permanent resident of Japan, South Korea, PRC, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, The Philippines, or Vietnam
Wesleyan Freeman Asian Scholars Program
- Funded by Freeman Foundation
- Locally assisted by AIG
- Improve understanding between U.S. and East Asia
- Students return home as leaders
- Full tuition scholarship awarded ($36,806 in 2007-2008) to all Freeman Scholars
- Financial Aid for additional costs based on need
- Room, board, supplies and miscellaneous expenses total $12,840 in 2007-2008
- If financial aid is required, complete the International Student Financial Aid Form
- If no financial aid needed, complete the Certification of Finances Form
- Financial aid will include “self-help,” (loan and campus employment).

- Ability to represent/share home culture
- Leadership qualities
- Likelihood of returning home
- Only 2 per country or region
