How to get into Daeil, Daewon(or Minjok) – A How-To-Guide for middle school student
I am a student of Daeil Foreign Language High School and I would like to give you few tips of getting into a Korean foreign language high school. But before that, you need to know what a foreign language high school is. It is a school built with the purpose to educate students who are talented in using foreign languages. However, this original purpose has been forgotten and schools favor students who can go to good university than those who are good at foreign languages. This is a key to get into these schools. Although you may not be good at English or other languages, there is nothing to worry about if you have good GPA in middle school and get high scores from entrance test.

- (In Seoul) Daeil, Daewon, Hanyoung, Myungduk, Gyunggi, Seoul
2. Types of Departments
-English, French, German, Chinese, Japanese, Spanish, Russian
3. Existence of Dormitory
-Depends on schools (There is one at my school)
<Tips>
1. Schools require English skills, but not to the intense level
-Although you may think students who go to these schools speak English fluently, that is not true. The only English skill you need is listening. There is a listening section in the entrance test and you need to prepare for it and get a good score. Schools do NOT look for your overall English skills, but your English listening skills.
2. Maintain good GPA
-It depends on schools and time. I got into my school with just okay GPA (I was around 100 out of 450). However, these days, schools demand higher GPA and importance of proficiency of foreign language has decreased. Since there are many applicants who get similar grades, GPA can be a factor.
3. STUDY MATH!
-Really, just study math. Many students have a hard time with math in their senior year. They say that if they had a time machine, they would go back to their first year and solve five questions everyday. Math is important because math questions on Korean SAT are hard. These high schools want those who can get high Korean SAT scores and go to good universities.
