The Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) is designed to help the Department of Homeland Security and Department of State better monitor school and exchange programs and F, M and J category visitors. Exchange visitor and student information is maintained in the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS). SEVIS is an Internet-based system that maintains accurate and current information on non-immigrant students (F and M visa), exchange visitors (J visa), and their dependents (F-2, M-2, and J-2). SEVIS enables schools and program sponsors to transmit mandatory information and event notifications via the Internet, to the Department of Homeland Security and Department of State (DOS) throughout a student or exchange visitor’s stay in the United States. Select SEVIS to go to the Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Internet site and learn more.

All student applicants must have a SEVIS generated I-20 issued by an educational institution approved by DHS, which they submit when they are applying for their student visa. The consular officer will need to verify your I-20 record electronically through the SEVIS system in order to process your student visa application. Unless otherwise exempt, participants whose SEVIS I-20 was issued on or after September 1, 2004 must pay a SEVIS I-901 Fee to the Department of Homeland Security for each individual program. The fee may be paid either through a special website, via Western Union, or by mail.See SEVIS-901 Fee or SEVIS for further information on how to pay the fee.

Notice: Effective 10/27/2008 the SEVIS fees will increase. To find out what the increase will be for your particular exchange program please see the SEVP Fact Sheet.

For more information visit the United States Department of State website at:

Preparing to study abroad can be extremely stressful.
There are a lot of issues that need to be addressed.
The most daunting and feared issue is probably the student visa (I-20 visa).
You can start the visa application process only after you have received your letter of acceptance from the college/university you will be attending.
Below is a link to a calender showing what you need to prepare for your entire college/university application process.

Take the test only when you are ready.

Standardized tests measure the same skills in the same way every time. The exact questions will be different, but the content you need to know will be the same. So, there’s really no point in taking a standardized test if you aren’t ready. If you’re unprepared, you won’t do your best, and you’ll want to take the test again anyway. So why bother? If you’re thinking about taking the test just “to see what it’s like,” take a practice test instead and save the registration fee.

Make sure that you have time to prepare.
People who know how the test is put together and the best strategies for the questions have a major advantage over those that don’t. So make sure that you budget some time to prepare. Some people have an easier time studying during the school year, but others prefer to study over the summer and take the test in the Fall. Either way is OK, as long as you’re ready to do your best. Be honest about the amount of time you’re willing to spend preparing, and make the commitment! It’ll pay off in points on test day.

Take the test early enough to report your scores.
Getting your application in early is always good, but most admissions offices won’t look at an application until that application is “complete,” which means it has to include all required test scores. So getting your test scores in early is good. (Just make sure you’re prepared!) Taking your test the Spring before you apply will get your scores in on time.

Leave yourself a margin for error.
On test day, you might get sick. Or your car might break down. Or you might just have a bad day. Lots of things that have nothing to do with your ability could affect your test score, and most of those things will lower your score. If your bad day happens on the last possible test date, you’re out of luck; you have to live with a bad score. But if you have another test date ahead of you, then you’ll have another chance to prove your abilities. That’s why it’s best to take the test early rather than late. It’s good to have a backup in case something goes wrong.

Getting a bad score is not a reason to take it again.
So, it’s good to take the test early, but only when you’re prepared. Now, what should you do if you have taken a standardized test and aren’t happy with your score?

Almost everyone wishes they scored at least a little higher. Unless you score perfectly, it’s always possible to do better. But wanting a better score isn’t enough. To be worth the preparation time, aggravation, and the new testing fee, you need a strong reason to believe that you’ll score significantly better.

Ask “what will be different next time?”
If you totally bombed the first test because you were sick, or something unexpected happened that affected your concentration, then go ahead and take it again. But if you were completely prepared the first time, taking it again isn’t likely to make a big difference. Standardized tests are very consistent, so if you don’t do anything differently, then you’re likely to wind up with about the same score. However, if you didn’t prepare well (or at all), then you have much to gain by improving your skills and taking the test again.

TOP 10 ESSAY WRITING TIPS

1. Don’t Thesaurusize Your Essay. Do Use Your Own Voice.

Admissions officers can tell Roget from an 18-year-old high school senior. Big words, especially when misused, detract from the essay, inappropriately drawing the reader’s attention and making the essay sound contrived.

Before: Although I did a plethora of activities in high school, my assiduous efforts enabled me to succeed.

After: Although I juggled many activities in high school, I succeeded through persistent work.

2. Don’t Bore the Reader. Do Be Interesting.

Admissions officers have to read hundreds of essays, and they must often skim. Abstract rumination has no place in an application essay. Admissions officers aren’t looking for a new way to view the world; they’re looking for a new way to view you the applicant. The best way to grip your reader is to begin the essay with a captivating snapshot. Notice how the slightly jarring scene depicted in the “after” creates intrigue and keeps the reader’s interest.

Before: The college admissions and selection process is a very important one, perhaps one that will have the greatest impact on one’s future. The college that a person will go to often influences his personality, views, and career.

After: An outside observer would have called the scene ridiculous: a respectable physician holding the bell of his stethoscope to the chest of a small stuffed bear.

3. Do Use Personal Detail. Show, Don’t Tell!

Good essays are concrete and grounded in personal detail. They do not merely assert “I learned my lesson” or that “these lessons are useful both on and off the field.” They show it through personal detail. “Show don’t tell,” means if you want to relate a personal quality, do so through your experiences and do not merely assert it.

Before: I developed a new compassion for the disabled.

After: The next time Mrs. Cooper asked me to help her across the street, I smiled and immediately took her arm.

The first example is vague and could have been written by anybody. But the second sentence evokes a vivid image of something that actually happened, placing the reader in the experience of the applicant.

4. Do Be Concise. Don’t Be Wordy.

Wordiness not only takes up valuable space, but it also can confuse the important ideas you’re trying to convey. Short sentences are more forceful because they are direct and to the point. Certain phrases such as “the fact that” are usually unnecessary. Notice how the revised version focuses on active verbs rather than forms of “to be” and adverbs and adjectives.

Before: My recognition of the fact that the project was finally over was a deeply satisfying moment that will forever linger in my memory.

After: Completing the project at last gave me an enduring sense of fulfillment.

5. Don’t Use Slang Yo’!

Write an essay, not an email. Slang terms, cliches, contractions, and an excessively casual tone should be eliminated. Here’s one example of inappropriately colloquial language.

Well here I am thinking about what makes me tick. You would be surprised. What really gets my goat is when kids disrespect the flag. My father was in ‘Nam and I know how important the military is to this great nation.

7. Do Use Active Voice Verbs

Passive-voice expressions are verb phrases in which the subject receives the action expressed in the verb. Passive voice employs a form of the word to be, such as was or were. Overuse of the passive voice makes prose seem flat and uninteresting.

Before: The lessons that prepared me for college were taught to me by my mother.

After: My mother taught me lessons that will prepare me for college.

8. Do Seek Multiple Opinions.

Ask your friends and family to keep these questions in mind:

Have I answered the question?
Does my introduction engage the reader? Does my conclusion provide closure?
Do my introduction and conclusion avoid summary?
Do I use concrete experiences as supporting details?
Have I used active-voice verbs wherever possible?
Is my sentence structure varied, or do I use all long or short sentences?
Are there any cliches such as “cutting edge” or “learned my lesson?”
Do I use transitions appropriately?
What about the essay is memorable?
What’s the worst part of the essay?
What parts of the essay need elaboration or are unclear?
What parts of the essay do not support my main argument?
Is every single sentence crucial to the essay? This must be the case.
What does the essay reveal about my personality?

9. Do Answer the Question.

Many students try to turn a 500-word essay into a complete autobiography. Not surprisingly, they fail to answer the question and risk their chances of attending college. Make sure that every sentence in your essay exists solely to answer the question.

10. Do Revise, Revise, Revise.

The first step in an improving any essay is to cut, cut, and cut some more. EssayEdge.com’s free admissions essay help course and Harvard-educated editors will be invaluable as you polish your essay to perfection. The EssayEdge.com free help course guides you through the entire essay-writing process, from brainstorming worksheets and question-specific strategies for the twelve most common essay topics to a description of ten introduction types and editing checklists.

Here’s a sample essay:

The sun sleeps as the desolate city streets await the morning rush hour. Driven by an inexplicable compulsion, I enter the building along with ten other swimmers, inching my way toward the cold, dark locker room of the Esplanada Park Pool. One by one, we slip into our still-damp drag suits and make a mad dash through the chill of the morning air, stopping only to grab pull-buoys and kickboards on our way to the pool. Nighttime temperatures in coastal California dip into the high forties, but our pool is artificially warmed to seventy-nine degrees; the temperature differential propels an eerie column of steam up from the water’s surface, producing the spooky ambience of a werewolf movie. Next comes the shock. Headfirst immersion into the tepid water sends our hearts racing, and we respond with a quick set of warm-up laps. As we finish, our coach emerges from the fog. He offers no friendly accolades, just a rigid regimen of sets, intervals, and exhortations.

Thus starts another workout. 4,500 yards to go, then a quick shower and a five-minute drive to school. Then it’s back to the pool; the afternoon training schedule features an additional 5,500 yards. Tomorrow, we start over again. The objective is to cut our times by another tenth of a second. The end goal is to achieve that tiny, unexplainable difference at the end of a race that separates success from failure, greatness from mediocrity. Somehow we accept the pitch–otherwise, we’d still be deep in our mattresses, slumbering beneath our blankets. In this sport, the antagonist is time. Coaches spend hours in specialized clinics, analyze the latest research on training technique, and experiment with workout schedules in an attempt to defeat time. Yet there are no shortcuts to winning, and workouts are agonizing.

I took part in my first swimming race when I was ten years old. My parents, fearing injury, directed my athletic interests away from ice hockey and into the pool. Three weeks into my new swimming endeavor, I somehow persuaded my coach to let me enter the annual age group meet. To his surprise (and mine), I pulled out an “A” time. I furthered my achievements by winning “Top 16″ awards for various age groups, setting club records, and being named National First Team All-American in the 100-Butterfly and Second Team All-American in the 200-Medley. I have since been elevated to the Senior Championship level, which means the competition now includes world-class swimmers. I am aware that making finals will not be easy from here–at this level, success is measured by mere tenths of a second. In addition, each new level brings extra requirements such as elevated weight training, longer weekend training sessions, and more travel from home. Time with friends is increasingly spent in the pursuit of the next swimming objective.

Sometimes, in the solitude of the laps, my thoughts transition to events in my personal life. This year, my grandmother suffered a reoccurrence of cancer, which has spread to her lungs. She had always been driven by good spirits and independence, but suddenly my family had to accept the fact that she now faces a limited timeline. A few weeks later, on the other side of the Pacific Ocean, my grandfather–who lives in Japan–learned he had stomach cancer. He has since undergone successful surgery, but we are aware that a full recovery is not guaranteed. When I first learned that they were both struck with cancer, I felt as if my own objective, to cut my times by fractions of a second, seemed irrelevant, even ironic, given the urgency of their mutual goals: to prolong life itself. Yet we have learned to draw on each other’s strengths for support–their fortitude helps me overcome my struggles while my swimming achievements provide them with a vicarious sense of victory. When I share my latest award or triumph story, they smile with pride, as if they themselves had stood on the award stand. I have the impression that I would have to be a grandparent to understand what my medals mean to them.

My grandparents’ strength has also shored up my determination to succeed. I have learned that, as in swimming, life’s successes often come in small increments. Sometimes even the act of showing up at a workout when your body and psyche are worn out separates a great result from a failure. The difference between success and failure is defined by the ability to overcome strong internal resistance. I know that, by consistently working towards my goals–however small they may seem–I can accomplish what I set for myself, both in and beyond the swimming pool.

Most colleges will ask you to include a personal statement in your application. They do this because they want to see if you can write, but they also want to meet the person behind the GPA and the SAT or ACT score. So make good use of the opportunity to show them who you really are and what makes you special. Follow these Top Ten Tips to help your essay stand out from the pack.

1. Start with yourself
Take a look at your credentials and your personal information. Write your resume and a list of your activities. List everything, and don’t be afraid to toot your own horn. Then look at what your strengths are and make sure these strengths are covered in your application. It is also OK to talk about your anxieties or a very difficult time in your life. If you do, speak of how you grew because of this experience. Be genuine.

2. Write in your own words
There should be no question in anyone’s mind as to who wrote your personal statement. Many colleges include a request for a “graded sample” of essay writing from their applicants. This policy began when it became apparent that some candidates were paying other people to write their essays. If you think you’re not a great writer, work on developing your own style. Writing is like any other skill: practice makes perfect.

3. Deal with how you look on paper
See how you look on paper. Look at your transcript. Was there a semester that your grades tanked because you were having some personal problems? Do your grades get better as you progress through high school because you got more and more serious about going to college? You don’t want to turn the personal essay into an apology for a bad grade, but if there is a story worth telling, consider using the personal essay to do it.

4. Make your reader see it through your eyes
This is another version of your English teacher’s mantra, “show, don’t tell.” When you are telling a story, try to make it come alive with lots of visual detail and specific example. Show the admissions committee what you mean. Create interesting characters and vivid scenes. Use an active voice and sensory words.

5. Cover new ground
The personal essay should not be a retelling of every little detail in your resume and transcript. It should introduce some new information about you or expand on something from your resume or transcript. Choose one significant event, or one aspect of your personality that you want to illuminate. The personal essay should reveal something that is not revealed anywhere else in your application.

6. Presentation counts
Lots of spelling and grammatical errors will ruin your chances of making a good impression, no matter what you have to say. Use a word processor to write your essay if at all possible and use the spelling and grammar checks. If you are entering your application online, be sure to write your essay beforehand, revise it, and proofread it. Get the opinions of your English teacher and guidance counselor before you start filling in the online template with the final copy. Don’t just click send.

7. Own the personal statement
So much of the college admissions process is impersonal; take advantage of this opportunity to reveal who you really are. Be yourself, and be creative. The essay is your place to shine. Colleges are asking to get to know you on a personal level, so you need to let them in. Remember, you own this section.

8. Write for your audience
Different college requires different essays. Always read the directions for each school’s essay carefully. If they say limit your statement to 500 words, they mean it. Also make sure to write different essays for different colleges. You can use the same general theme, but be sure to include how you and a particular school match up. You want each school to feel like it’s your top choice.

9. Write it now!
The personal essay is too important to leave it until the last minute. You’ll need to put your essay through several drafts and ask adults you trust to read it and give you feedback. For that process, you’ll need time. So, start today. If you think of what you write now as just a rough draft, that may take the pressure off.

This practical month-by-month calendar is designed to help you stay on top of the process of applying to college. For most students, the process begins in September of the junior year of high school and ends in June of the senior year. You may want to begin considering financial aid options, reviewing your academic schedule, and attending college fairs before your junior year.

Junior Year

Fall
Check with your counselor to make sure your course credits will meet college requirements of the type of school you want to go to. (Your local community college, state university, liberal arts college, and prestigous private university will all have different entrance requirements.)

Be sure you are involved in one or two extracurricular activities. Taking a leadership position in those activities is a plus.

Begin building your personal list of colleges. Click here for a list of things to consider when choosing a college.

Register for and take the PSAT. You can pick up the registration form in your guidance counselor’s office. If you do well on the PSAT it could lead to National Merit Scholarship money so get a practice book and do some studying!

Strive to get the best grades you can. A serious effort will provide you with the most options during the application process.
Winter
Get involved in a community service activity.

Begin to read newspapers and a weekly news magazine. Being informed about current events will help you both with college admissions and scholarship essays and with college interviews.

With your school counselor, decide when to take the ACT Assessment, SAT I, and SAT II Subject Tests (and which Subject Tests to take). If English is not your primary language and you are planning on attending a college in North America, decide when to take the TOEFL test.

Keep your grades up!

Check The National Association for College Admissions Counseling Website for schedules and locations of college fairs.
Spring
Register and study for the standardized tests you’ve decided to take. You can register online for both the SAT and ACT. Sign up for an online or in person course and/or buy a comprehensive study guide. Online courses are relatively new, but can give you individualized instruction at your own pace and at a lower cost. Check out our practice questions for the SAT and ACT.

Meet with your school counselor to discuss college choices. Review your transcript and test scores with your counselor to determine how competitive your range of choices should be.

Click here to help you select which colleges to apply to.

Develop a preliminary list of 15 to 20 colleges and universities and search for information on them.

Start scheduling campus visits and interviews. When school is in session (but never during final exams) is the best time. Summers are OK, but will not show you what the college is really like. If possible, save your top college choices for the fall. Be aware, however, that fall is the busiest visit season, and you will need advance planning. Don’t forget to write thank-you letters to your interviewers.

Plan a challenging schedule of classes for your senior year.

Begin to record personal and academic information that can be later transferred to your college applications.

Think about which teachers you will ask to write recommendations.

Structure your summer plans to include advanced academic work, travel, volunteer work, or a job.

Summer
Find out which of the colleges you’d like to apply to accept the Common Application . Write to any colleges on your list that do not accept the Common Application to request application forms or check out the school websites for online application options.

Begin working on your application essays.

Schedule campus visits and interviews for any college you’re interested in that you did not visit in the Spring. Fall is a great time to visit campuses, but you need to plan in advance because it is the busiest time.

Senior Year

Fall
If you are going to re-take the ACT, SAT I, SAT II, and/or TOEFL tests, or you did not take them in the spring, register now. Sign up for an in person or online course and buy a comprehensive study guide. Check out our practice questions for the SAT and ACT.

Check with your school counselor to see if any college representatives will be visiting your high school or your community this fall.

Ask appropriate teachers if they would write recommendations for you. Make sure you give them all the proper forms with your portion of the forms completed. Also, give them addressed, stamped envelopes to send in the letters. Don’t forget to write thank-you letters to all teachers that write you recommendations!

Meet with your counselor to compile your final list of colleges.

Begin filling out college applications for your final list of colleges. Many colleges have online applications that you can access right from the college website. Take your time filling out the applications. This is the main snapshot the school gets of you, so take your time to make your application as high quality as possible. Check out our tips on how to make your application stand out.

Write your college admissions essays. These can really differentiate you from the other applications. Check out our admission essay secrets!

Photocopy or print extra copies of your applications to use as a backup.

Be sure that you have requested your ACT Assessment and SAT scores be sent to your colleges of choice.

Don’t be late! Keep track of all deadlines for transcripts, recommendations, financial aid, applications etc.
Winter
Meet with your counselor to verify that all is in order and that transcripts are out to colleges.

If you are applying for financial aid, prepare the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and PROFILE. Check out our FAFSA and PROFILE tips and Financial Aid Calendar. You can also get information on the FAFSA and fill out the form online at www.fafsa.ed.gov or through your school counseling office. The sooner you apply for financial aid, the better your chances. You can start submitting the FAFSA after January 1 the year you will attend college.

If applicable, let colleges know of any new honors or accomplishments that were not in your original application.

Spring

Be sure you have received a FAFSA acknowledgment.

Receive acceptance letters. Congratulations!

Go back to visit one or two of your top-choice colleges.

Review the financial aid offers you receive. Appeal to your top colleges if you require more financial aid or if your circumstances have changed.

Notify your college of choice that you have accepted its offer (and send in a deposit by May 1).

Notify the colleges you have chosen not to attend of your decision.

Graduate! Congratulations and best of luck.

Many students think that, to get into a good college, they need to be the “model” candidate. While good grades and high test scores are definitely important factors, colleges want a diverse student body of people with real interests and personalities. So as you get your applications together, focus on being the best version of you that you can be.

When you think about getting into college, what are the big factors you imagine schools are looking for? If you’re like most students, your mental list probably looks something like this:

grades: being on the honor roll, taking hard classes
standardized test scores: doing well on the SAT/ACT or other tests
recommendations: strong references from teachers, guidance counselors, bosses, or coaches
application essay: looking interesting, witty, but humble to the admissions committee
college interview: talking to an on-campus or alumni interviewer with intelligence, a good sense of humor, and maturity
There’s one more thing that should be on your list, though. It’s a major factor that colleges take into account when they evaluate candidates for admission: the hook.

What exactly is “the hook”? Well, it’s a unique characteristic that sets you apart from the other applicants. The hook is what makes your application jump off the pile. It could be a personal attribute, like your ethnic heritage, or it might be an unusual hobby or job. The key to the hook is that it’s a little different, something that makes the admissions committee remember your application. Some examples of possible hooks include:
personal achievements: Did you start a radio station at your school?

special talent: Are you a chef?
geographical diversity: Did you grow up in Alaska?
extra-curricular activities: Do you play the bassoon?
ethnic heritage & socio- economic background: Are you a Pacific Islander, or the first person in your family to go to college?
leadership qualities: Did you run your school’s chapter of Amnesty International?
athletic talent: Are you a champion speed skater?
legacy: Did your parents or grandparents attend the school?
For a good hook, you either want something unusual or something you devoted a lot of energy to. So unless you were captain of the football team, playing football won’t necessary set you apart. Competitive kayaking probably would, though.

Remember, focusing is the key to life and to success in the college admissions process. So instead of signing up for yet one more club or sport, or throwing up your hands because you don’t think you’ve done enough activities, think about the things you do that you get the most excited about and of which you’re most proud. Think about what makes you different from everyone you know. Then make sure to tell the admissions committee about it in your application.

Good luck, and enjoy the harpsichord lessons! (just kidding)
